Kevlar Tyres

This is gonna sound daft. It does to me

I have a marathon tyre on the front, it has the kevlar belt is quite new, only having done a few hundred miles.

Recently I have had two punctures, about a hundred or so miles apart. On both ocassions nothing could be found in the tyre that could have been the cause. It left me baffled. I always like to find the culprit!

On speaking with a fellow rider who is much more experienced than me, he told me he had stopped using kevlar tyres for this very reason. He said that in his experience such tyres would aften have very small beads of kevlar poking through when the tyre was worn or under high pressure. These would cause the puncture but when the tyre was no longer under pressure, when you were checking it for thorns etc, you would not feel anything as the small bead had retracted again into the rubber.

I have to admit that since the last instance I have run the tyre at a lower pressure and so far have not had another problem but I cant get it out of my head that I might have been the subject of an "in" joke about the kevlar

Any thoughts or opinions?

I have used kevlar tyres for the last 6000 miles with only one puncture. This was after I hit a major pothole.e I always thought kevlar is material like so I am not sure how it could cause a puncture.

I would check to see if your getting any rough edges from your spoke holes that are peeking through the rim liner 1st of all.

I doubt very much that reputable manufacturers would use a material in their tyres which actually caused puntures!

I suggest you remove your tyre and check the rim and rim tape very carefully as that is the most likely cause.
