Keo Max 2 pedal keeps unscrewing from cartridge!

The body keeps unscrewing from the cartridge on my RH Keo Max 2 pedal. I understand that threads on pedals and cranks unscrew because of the cyclical movement but I thought the LH and RH threading thing was designed to prevent this.

I've reassembled tight with some locking compound but this didn't work. Going to check tonight that the tiny bearings aren't binding or graunching then reassemble a lot tighter with some Bostik on the plastic thread where it enters the pedal body.

Anybody got any helpful comments?

No suggestions! I wonder if @Yellow Saddle has any ideas?

Not sure what you are referring to. Have you stripped it down to the spindle shown here? You are not talking about the thread on the far right are you but near where it says Double Seal?

Mine had a bit of play so figuring they had worked loose just added some PTFE tape (On the double seal thread) and they have been fine.

I don't think anything is serviceable inside so if the tape doesn't work then superglue the suckers.

Yes the plastic threaded bit on the right. Just cleaned it all up and smeared Bostick on it but the suggestion above to use PTFE tape is better, so I think I'll pull it apart and redo it with PTFE.

Well that didn't go well. I cleaned off the still-wet Bostik and wrapped the plastic bush with PTFE but on tightening the thread wouldn't engage and it just clicked and jumped one thread and wouldn't tighten at all. I guess the threads on both the bush and inside the pedal body are worn thanks to me having ridden some miles with the bush unscrewed and the PTFE just filled the grooves causing the thread to lose grip. So I cleaned it all off, re-applied Bostik and put it back together, tightening the bush as tight as I dared.

I do have a pair of rather worn entry-level Keos and I'm thinking I might try the spindle from those in this Keo Max pedal. The bearing action isn't as smooth but does anybody know if it will fit?

Can you buy replacement spindles from Look?

If all else fails I might just go for the Araldite solution. I want to keep using the Max pedals because the metal plate makes them hard-wearing and stable.

Exustar produce some good value for money KeO compatible pedals, or just get some new KeO pedals, I've worn out two pairs of KeO pedals since 2010...
I am not sure I would go for Exustars if he has had this problem.
I have had two pairs of Exustar pedals and both have unscrewed of the spindle. Admittedly the first pair after a few thousand miles but the second pair after a few hundred, much to @400bhp s amusement as he was cycling behind me and I was doing about 40 mph down a hill at the time and my foot came loose with the pedal body attached to the cleat and shoe.
I had a look at a few online reviews and it would appear it is quite a common problem with them.

Oh that's interesting.

When you unscrew the spindle from a new Keo pedal there is a fair amount of resistance as the plastic bush thingy is a tight fit in the pedal body. All that resistance has gone and mine just twiddles round easily. I will see how it goes with the Bostik solution and if that fails I'll try silicon sealant and then the Araldite. As Accountantpete wrote above, there isn't much in the pedal that's user-serviceable anyway.

Here it is:

Just by way of a follow-up.... the Bostik fix has worked and over 100 hilly miles later the cartridge has not unscrewed from the pedal body.

Globalti,

Sorry to hi-jack your thread but i've got the same Keo Max 2 Pedals as yourself and i'm trying to figure out out to disassemble them so that I can clean and regrease them. My left hand one has started to feel a little rough and no longer spins around as freely as it should.

Is there a special tool or spanner that's required to loosen that star shaped bit of the pedal. If so do you know what it's called or where I can obtain one I can't seem to find any info anywhere as to how to remove the inner bit of the pedal as shown in your picture.

Any help would be appreciated.

**EDIT**
I've just read that a simple ring spanner (19mm I believe) is used to loosen the star shaped bit. Much simpler than I initially thought.
