I bought one of the Lidl saddle bags a little while ago and it has just struck me that it is probably not waterproof. Apart from putting the contents in a polythene bag any other ideas for keeping the tools et al dry?

if it is a bag with the quick release mechanism, make sure you never put anything valuable or house keys in it.

and yes, polythene bag is the simplest and lightest solution.

What is your theory about never putting house keys in a QR saddlebag? I do all the time, I'd rather they are there in a crash rather than in my jersey spearing into my flesh  If its theft simply remove the bag when not cycling.

I only carry keys, coins, multitool and p'ture repair kit (in sealed tube) in my saddlebag and must admit I let it get damp

basically the clip can unclip, no need to ask how I found that out. So unless you are checking your bag (ooh err) every 15 seconds to make sure it is still there, do not keep valuables or items that cause a lot of hassle when lost e.g. house keys.

I now use a bag with strap, and yes, the straps can wear over time but they give plenty of warning and there is usually two of them.
