Thanks. Until about half way around my avarage was 15-16mph, which for me ie decent (its an mtb remember, albeit with slicks on). But I hit the River Trent and form then onwards I was battling a huge headwind. Really annoying and really hard work , and I was plodding along at 10mph for much of the rest of the route.

Still, its all good training I guess.

Good going Chris, bet you feel good. You really do need to try and avoid rivers though, you get wet.

lol yeah, good tip.

I do feel good. I wanted to do 30 miles, so planned a route and was determined not to shortcut home due to the wind.

I do however, want a proper road bike NOW

Well done Chris. You picked a hell of a day to do it!! I've just got home on my motorbike and that was one scarey ride in this wind.

Thanks. I needed to get out, so it was not going to put me off having cut my hand 2 weeks ago it is only just healed enough so I took the chance

Well done, did mine the other week, but on MTB off road with off-road tyres.

I hate the wind, it all seems so pointless.

Haven't been out for 2 weeks, too wet.

And today I am absolutely exhausted. Had a full day, so soldiered on but I'm all weak and shivery - except not got a temperature early night for me.

Yeah I reckon 30 miles on my bike in that wind is more like 40 on a road bike on a still day?

How much warier is a road bike?

If you mean 'how much easier is a drop-bar road-bike?' I'd say lots!

Road-bikes are designed for going quickly and efficiently over ... roads!
Everything is lighter and more aerodynamic, your position on the bike is maximised for power output and low frontal area/lower wind resistance. Lighter and thinner wheels will spin-up quicker and create less drag than heavy MTB bits. No weighty forks etc.
The sit-up-and-beg wide-bar position of an MTB is like trying to pedal a door into the wind.
