Just built my first wheel in 13 years

It's a rear wheel that I shall use for my single speed MTB build.

It's made up of an exage hub that I bought years ago and had kicking around, the spokes, nipples, and v-section double-walled rim from a crap wheel that I found on the dump, and a few extra spokes and nipples from a wheel that the neighbour's kid gave me after he wrecked it.

I built it on Saturday, on the living room carpet, without a wheel jig, while listening to the News Quiz and looking after the little fella.

It's nearly straight, and nearly round, and I'm absurdly pleased.

Congrats:biggrin:

I'm in the middle of building my first wheelset. Front is essentially done but rear is on hold until I'm back at Easter. Not perfect yet but bloody satisfying.

They're my babies:blush:

I built my first wheel out of "spare/scrap parts" too - just recently.

I know exactly what you mean about being pleased. But kids have a way of deflating parents pride...... I told my son he could have it for his first roadie (which is only F&F at present).... no gratitude at all and he doesnt want it - not until I'd tested it thoroughly on my own bike ;)

Any cheap and good (if you can get that) jigs out there ?

PS well done - I'm also considering it too....

I didn't use either....

Just wait until Hackney's fixie bubble bursts - you'll be able to pick them up cheap from some bankrupt hipster bikeshop owner.

Otherwise, there are some interesting homemade versions to be foudnon the internet.

Would love to have a go at building a wheel, but do not have a clue where to start!

Well done Twenty...

I constructed my own jig and dishing tool.

You need a hacksaw and a drill. A sheet of 3/4" plywood and some 6mm bolts.
