Ctw scheme is paidup so I've been toying with replacing my sirius.

I've just test rode a a bike I've been looking at for some time.......Croix de fer, it didnt live up to expectations.

It was a size down from my sirius as thats all they had in the shop and I was on my lunch break, saddle height changed so I have the correct leg length and all that, speed kings up to pressure...... had the bike for half an hour.
I was looking forward to being impressed by the smooth ride.

Either I'm an insensitive clot or there simply isnt that great a differance.

I've also been looking at a alfine pompetine, will I get a similar ride from that?
Is half an hour too soon or first reaction is usually correct?

As my sirius is parked behind me in the office I can hear over my shoulder a faint patronising "I told you so!"

What bikes have you lusted after that havent lived up to the mark?

The tyre pressure will have more bearing on the 'smoothness' of the ride than anything else.

For ages I wanted a Tricross as my all-rounder; LBS ordered one in my size. Test rode it & didn't like at all so also tested a Sirrus they had.

Great bike which I liked instantly but it was base model & I wanted carbon forks so they ordered an Elite for me.

Took this out & hated it....went back to the shop & tried & bought the Crux crosser which seemingly I'd fallen for sub-consciously previously, but discounted on cost.

LBS didn't bat an eyelid through all this, so will always get my business in future

I ride a Croix de Fer. I haven't ridden a Sirrus, so can't directly compare, but I was very impressed with the springy steel frame.

But, as they say, the right bike for one person can be the wrong bike for someone else.

Dont say that Gaz, I might be popping over to the Leeds EBC as they have a 56cm Day one in the shop so I see if I like hub gearing.

Might nip down to On one while I'm on the wrong side of the Pennines.

built up a Pompetamine to replace a Surly Crosscheck and didn't like it(especially didn't like track ends and it's quite a low front end), bought a Salsa Vaya frameset instead and was much better, as good as the Crosscheck.

Did also lust after the Genesis stuff, not so much now

Mac why did you replace the cross check?

disc brake desires, if they had disc brake tabs on the Xcheck I'd have bought a newer one, I took a punt on the Salsa Vaya as they are part of the same company as Surly and wasn't disappointed and I did prefer the sloping geometry over the horizontal of the Xcheck, apart from that very similar rides.

That I'm selling the Vaya frameset is only a factor of my own stupidity, when I took pictures of my 'new' 3 bike stable someone pointed out to me that I had 3 rather similar bikes. With the most similar being the Vaya and the 'road' allrounder custom Ti frame, one of them had to go and it obviously wasn't going to be the Ti frame. So the Vaya has been replaced by a custom Ti 29er frame instead. The third bike is now an old MTB I got for £20, I've added rack, guards and road tyres and I've finally got a bike cheap enough that I can leave it locked up at the shops(still use two d-locks though).

A bit more thought and planning and I'd have saved myself a fortune but the one bit I don't regret is the decision to move to disc brakes. Depending on work the only thing on the horizon now is a possible Brompton.

I like the approach of both On-One and Genesis but I think they're not quite there yet, product wise, for more general use multi purpose bikes. Still feels like they are adding on bits to existing frame designs and making it work rather than taking a proper redesign approach. In that respect I think Surly and Salsa are ahead of them in the OTP steel framesets that can be used for a variety of riding.

If you're not wanting disc brakes then I'd go Surly every time
