I'm quite happy. I was out for about for about an hour and I cycled about seven miles. For my first proper ride, that's pretty good.

I'd just got my bike fixed and I was wearing my helmet and my high visibility vest. There were some times where I had to go on the pavement (dangerous corners etc) but for the vast majority, I was on the road. I wasn't cowering away in the gutter, I was making myself seen as it was dark.

It's pretty hard work on a BMX bike, I hate the fact that I don't have any gears or suspension, made going up hills really hard work.

Brilliant. 7 miles on a BMX is worthy enough!

As you grow in confidence you'll find less of a need to get on the pavements.

Congrats! When I started commuting to work I ended up on the pavements at walking pace at some of the hills.. Now I've been at it a while I have no problem staying on the roads.. Just been looking at longer routes with bigger hills actually

Jesus mate, 7 miles on a bmx! Well done, thats well worthy of of congratulations.
Bet you were shattered at the end of that.

Like terry said, you'll soon be wishing your rides were longer and more hilly

7 Miles on a BMX is like at least 27 on a road bike so well done:thumbsup: . if your riding at night make sure you have lights as well as reflective vest. The reflective vest will only show up when lights shine on it, if a car comes up behind you on a bend they wont see your reflective stuff until very close to you.

I love threads like this, novices who are clearly bitten by the cycling bug. Seven miles on a BMX is awesome. You'll soon get fit doing that! I think the peak of my cycling fitness was when I rode nothing but BMX for about five years solid. When I moved on to road bikes and mountain bikes I could keep up with pretty much anyone. In many ways the BMX epitomises the spirit of the bicycle, they are simple and fun. Anyone who frowns on them has missed out in a big way.

I was gonna say 7miles, thats shite even as a 1st ride!! Until I read the bmx bit. Still not a proper ride tho....
