I've found a new cross country route, the John Muir Way, from Dunbar to Helensbrugh via Edinbrugh and Falkirk

It looks like it only recently been completed, Has anyone done it yet ? what it like ?
As thinking of this as a route to do next year

I haven't done it, but wanted to Thank you for highlighting it - looks an interesting route. I'm hoping to do a coast to coast at some point - this looks like contender.

I've cycled the balloch to helensburgh section and thoroughly enjoyed it. My profile pic is taken from one of the viewpoints. They've also just secured funding to extend into the Kilpatrick hills, which is very near me too

"The Way uses pavements, gravel & grassy paths and quiet roads." My guess is this is not road bike friendly. sounds like a mountain bike would be better suited. Mmmm, I guess its still down south for a proper Coast to Coast route.

We did part of it today as we went round the Forth. The bit we did was from Bo'ness to South Queensferry. We were all on touring bikes, I have 700cx28s. It was ok (though my very slick front Gatorskin slithered a bit on the muddy bits . Certainly the bit we did would be fine if dry, but I imagine would be a bit of an issue if wet, and maybe a bit rough for a full on road bike.

Fine for a tourer, cross or hybrid/mtb

I did a part of the John Muir way a few years ago, just a short bit between Dunbar and East Linton. There's no way you could get round the way we walked on a bicycle. We ended up right out at the mouth of the Tyne, a very, boggy and marshy area, but pretty none the less, although a bit damp for camping. Glad to hear they've made a cycle route out of it, must veer off from the old route a lot? Will have to check it out.

Obviously a really old thread but I thought I would have a search around before asking for any information about this route before I took it to the blethering thread.

I didn't know that this route existed until recently and reckoned it could be fun for a few days away with Mrs Slick. Has anyone done the whole route, although it's probably easier for me to join at Balloch which is probably around 40 miles from home so I thought we could spend the night there or thereabouts before starting. I also know there are much easier and direct routes to head east but I thought this looks interesting which is much more important to Mrs Slick. I am on a road bike but I've just invested in some heavy duty wheels and will put on some decent puncture resistant 32mm tyres before we go.

I did find this blog but running a couple of kids close to tears is not my idea of a good time and I think Mrs Slick would be very disappointed if I couldn't find her somewhere a bit more salubrious to stay than the camping pod. :B)

How did you manage to end up at the mouth of the Tyne, while cycling between Dunbar and East Linton? That's some detour . Or did you borrow my Garmin Edge Explore?
