Imagine you have just had a really poor night in an hotel in Lisbon because of the vehicular traffic and underground trains running nearby, at the same level as your second floor room, over a road with a road running above the train track. (Yes I know that sounds weird, but true). At reception in the morning you approach the friendly guy at the desk who wears a badge with his name ‘Joao’ emblazoned on his lapel. After negotiating for a quieter room you ask if he knows any famous portugues sportsmen. He replies negatively, so you ask naively if he has heard of Joao Almeida, the cyclist. No, the only cyclist he thinks is well known is Rui Costa. Presumably this is a reflection of pro cycling being a minor sport in Portugal as much as in the uk. I make no apologies for wasting a couple of minutes of your life with this, I needed to tell someone.
