A previously overweight and unfit colleague bought himself a horrible heavy upright bike in the spring and began commuting the few miles to work. After a summer of this I've seen the improvement in his shape, his general look and attitude to life. So on Monday I lent him my Specialzed Tricross for the week and... he's loving the (comparatively) light weight, the speed and comfort, taking around 25% off his time! He must have built some good muscles hauling the heavyweight around if he's finding the Tricross light!

So today I brought my Specialized Roubaix SL4 in and fitted some flatties. He shot off at an impressive speed and came back a few minutes later having covered almost a mile, not too out of breath either. He's just blown away by the Roubaix, absolutely amazed.

Hope his wife appreciates what I've done!

I can really feel the difference in weight between my 13.5kg hybrid and my 10kg road bike. The road bike feels like a sports car in comparison. It's amazing the difference a few kilos can make.

Don't tell that to all these naysayers on here who say it makes very little difference.
There might be other factors other than just weight like I'm more upright on the hybrid and my hybrid has fatter tyres but I think weight makes a fair difference.

My hybrid weighs 17 kilos. Sometimes at the end of the day I feel like I need a forklift to get it up the front door step.
If I'd had more awareness about things such as weight, I'd probably bought a lighter bike, purely for lifting and manoeuvering round.

The thing is, where do you put them all?! When (not if) I get my new road bike, it's going to have to live with me for a bit, I think, until I can a) clear a space in the shed and b) buy one of these great big "lock me to the floor, and the wall" jobbies......

To be fair many such conversations are about the same.species of bike and the weight difference that could also be achieved by emptying your bladder or a taking a dump before going out, not a whole different riding style & discarding the equivalent of numerous bags of sugar from your bike.

You can't laugh off the significant effect that skinny hard roadie tyres, better wheels, a more aerodynamic frame geometey and proper road bike gearing has on the speed differential in this instance.

@Globalti his Mrs may have to take in an lodger or get the wardrobe fitted with a comfy chair in case he punctures and comes home earlynow you've planted the seed ;)

If a new bike is N+1, the the storage option surely must be Shed+1
