OK so I was having trouble getting into the largest cog on the front so I fettled with it and that now works but the back cog seems to have become an automatic gear changing at the worst times (harder gears going up hills, I have a 1mile+ incline on my commute) so I tried fettling with that but I'm having no luck and really not liking automatic gears so I've admitted defeat and taking it to the LBS tomorrow for a service, I know its shameful but my excuse is I still consider myself a newbie

Watch this, it usually helps people save a few quid

I know but over the last few weeks I've had every book the library has to offer and still in the same situation its annoying and can only be doing damage, so its going in and will hopefully be all 'new' again when I get it back

Gears can seem like rocket science, and it's easy to say, but they really aren't complicated at all.

You're adamant it's going in anway, so what's the worst that can happen*. Watch the video, follow it step by step, and I'd wager you'll be ringing the LBS in the morning to say you don't need to bring it in after all.

*if it all goes Pete Tong you're taking it in anyway, but as you're clearly not afraid to tinker I'm sure you'll be OK.

I used to brake stuff every time I tried doing it; a problem I overcame by stopping trying. Over the years I must have saved a fortune by not bothering and paying someone else to do it properly.

Good man, as I'm sure @Fnaar will agree, it's always good to get your tool out in the dark and have a fettle ;)

I tried, I growled at it trapped my fingers in the cog and stabbed myself with the screwdriver so I'm not playing anymore particularly after I thought it was fixed then it jumped again causing a shin vs pedal and groin vs crossbar incident so I've just dropped Satan off to be tamed
