It's re-assuring to know that not all foreign countries carry on as normal in 10 feet of snow as everyone maintains. In France tonight, much of the autoroute network in the north has ground to a halt due to heavy snow, Orly's shut and they even closed the Eiffel Tower today
The French are crap with snow as well
The radio station linked above had been taking calls all evening from stranded drivers taking hours to get home. Sounds familiar!

Funny you should say that.
I drive to the Alps most years, and the only time I had bother, was the year I forgot my snowchains.
I've never heard of anyone spending the night stuck on the Autoroute Blanche.

Autoroute Blanche? Is that the crazy elevated section that has that right-angle bend a couple of hundred metres above the valley floor as you head towards Chamonix? Massive concrete barrier, and loads of "relentir" signs?

Oh, happy days.

No, that's just the new viaduct that doubles up the twisty old road from Sallanches into the Chamonix valley. The A40 Autoroute Blanche goes all the way from Macon to Cham, linking the main A6 north-south motorway with the Mont Blanc tunnel. Towards Bourg-en Bresse it has some amazing sections of viaduct.

We are still bad here though - slight thaw in Manchester, but local radio reporting numerous crashes on all major motorways - yep, people driving too fast, hit black ice and boom............ Chaos.
