Went for a ride on my own today from Vale of Glamorghan through Cardiff across Wentloog levels onto Gwent levels to Redwick then Magor and back by a similar route.

The one bit I dont like is getting through Cardiff. The easiest way involves a few miles on Rover Way which is a potholed dirty old road with lots of traffic including lots of HGVs thundering past. Its narrow so close overtakes are inevitable , big potholes need looking out for as a sudden swerve around one is not advisable.

On the way out mid morning it wasnt too bad but after meandering around the Gwent levels taking pictures etc I was going to meet Rover Way at rush hour.

There are other routes but none are ideal so I was pondering which way to go as I approached the big roundabout. Imagine my delight when I saw a trailer on its side completely blocking most of the road, it looked like a construction site lighting tower and the amount of broken glass was incredible.. Nice policeman had closed the road but allowed me to carry bike through the wreckage and then pedal all the way to Cardiff Bay with barely another vehicle going my way.

If you were one of the poor sods caught up in the traffic chaos I really am sorry for gloating. (maybe  )

Ridiculous isn't it, compare going north and south along the Taff Trail with east and west....

I definately would give Rover Way a miss , either using the bus lanes on Newport Road ( although the wind in seems to whistle along there constantly ) or maybe through Splott and Clydesmuir road. definatley shorter , slower traffic, no scrap metal on the road and no hassle from the gypsy kids.
