....I went on a 35 mile ride today and, at the end of it, my lower regions were a bit sore.
I wear good quality lycra shorts but have never used chamois cream. My question is:" Does one have to buy cycling related cream or does baby cream do the same job?" Also, does it really make that much difference?

How much riding do you do? Is 35 miles an irregular achievement?

If you don't spend that much time in the saddle, you will probably find that you will toughen up down there with a bit of persistence.

I do use Assos cream on most rides.

As another thread, sudo good once sore but I personally wouldn't want it all over expensive cycling shorts

Without resorting to photographs (please!) which 'bits' are sore?
Chaffing is a different problem to 'pressure on the sit bones' kind of soreness.
Chaffing requires annointing with cream. Pressure pain can be the saddle, saddle width, or lack of miles to toughen up your ass.

Approaching perfection from a distance.
Have you changed your saddle position recently? I find that having the saddle even 1cm too high will cause me to roll my hips and this can result in soreness.

I think you may be right on this. May be I just need to toughen up those regions by doing longer rides as it seems to happen after about 20 miles.

E45 as mentioned is good for long rides.

If you get red skin that gets sore, and won't go, it's worth a trip to the chemist for lamisil. It's for jock rash and athletes foot.

Keep an eye out for it as it's worth having in the cabinet.
