I normally use Holland & Barrets ISO drink which is buy when it's 2 for 1 which = £4.00 per 400 grm of powder.
After some CC recommendations I am going to try High5.
My LBS (part of a chain) want £28.00 for 2.2 Kg.
I can get it on line (free delivery) for £18.00.
Now.........someone tells me "they**" can offer this low price as they buy "near the best before date" direct from the manufacturer.
**For obvious reason I wont name the supplier"
So...................
a) does anyone know if this is correct ?
b) would it matter if it is past the "best before" ?
I ask b) because it is 2.2 Kg and as I only do 2 longish rides per week (IF the weather is good) I dont want to end up binning half of it.

I never pay full £ for HIGH5, I wait until sportpursuit have a flash sale on then buy enough to do until the next time.

It will also not go out of date, I've used gels 12months + past lol If anything with powders, moisture getting in will happen long before it's unusable

It's powder. It won't go off. All these energy products have 'best before', not use by dates. Last week I had the last of a batch of short-dated Zipvit protein bars I got in September 2013. Still working my way through Zero tabs dated 2012. As you can tell, I'm still here....

It does go off if left long enough. I recently binned some TwinLab that ran out in 2011 found lurking at the back of a cupboard. It was like a mix of cement dust and off milk powder, though it had taken 4 years to get to that state.

+1, have a go and make your own.

My homemade ride drink recipe is a variable mix of pure fruit juice to water and a pinch of salt. I'm a pootler tho not training or racing.

I asked you to marry me a short while ago but if you insist on shopping at "high end" expensive shops like Waitrose I am afraid we are incompatible. Give me an Aldi girl and I'm happy

It's still cheaper than buying the ready mixed Lucozade stuff ^^^ and no more expensive than brands  Tastes great too, and none of that artificial sweetener rubbish...good old fashioned refined sugar and fruit juice

Before wasting your money on branded stuff, have a look on Myprotein for the prices on their maltodextrin, which is the carbohydrate powder that forms the basis for all kinds of instant foods like soups, gravy, energy drinks and so on. Buy a large bag and add a couple of "fingers" to your bottle then supplement with squash, juice or an electrolyte tablet if you feel you need some salts.

Example: 2.5 kgs of maltodextrin: £7.99. Here: http://www.myprotein.com/sports-nutrition/maltodextrin/10530114.html

That's a food supplement, not a hydrater which is what the OP appears to want.

Myprotein, not the best company out there, I heard they have failed the last two independent quality check s ,
For not giving the correct doses within the package, when they claim it has 70%protein, but really it has only 50%,.

But this is only what I hear, from people in the body building industry.

I think I've said enough now.

1kg Sugar 50p.
500g table salt 50p
Jif Lemon 50p

The geat thing about adding some of those to your water bottle is that cycing ensures it self dissolves. So no shaking is required.
