Hi All - I am new to the site and am wondering if this collaboration of cycling fanatics can help? I began cycling around 16 months ago and have done over 2000 miles - still rubbish on hill though  Having suffered from awful PITA (pain in the ...) I had a cortisone injection a week ago followed by a couple of intense physiotherapy sessions. I am still climbing the walls from pain and have been advised this is a typical cycling condition. I LOVE my bike and cannot bear the thought of giving it up......Any thoughts please?? x

Rest it. Inflamed bursas usually occur through over-use and you might just have been unlucky. Alternatively, simple changes to your riding position, saddle height, angle, etc can also make a big difference in alleviating pressure on the area. Worth a try...

Are you just cycling for exercise?, I find if I just cycle I get pain at lower back/hip but if I do a few decent walks a week I can maintain same level of cycling with less discomfort.

Unfortunately, I have Rheumatoid Arthritis which has wrecked my feet, so I am unable to walk very far - which is why I love cycling so much, used to be a runner - but I do lots of other fitness routines

I had hip bursitis last year after a fall on the way to the cycle shed (!) I took ages to heal properly. I did have a cortisone injection - hurt a lot! It seems like a combination of that, time (9 months), complete rest from cycling and stretching kind of cured it. I am still careful to do the stretches.

Amir, can you describe hip bursitis? I'm beginning to suspect I may have this in my hip - it's a constant low-grade soreness at the back of the hip joint, not related to walking or cycling and there's no sensation of creaking or grinding so I'm pretty sure it's not arthritis. It's worst when I'm sitting on the loo seat and most of my weight is concentrated in that area, especially as it's confined only to the side where my weight goes when I cant my hips over to attend to hygiene, if you get my meaning. Whaddya think?

Globalti - I am not a doc so best to take professional advice. Trochanteric bursitis is what I had - pain is over side of hip (over bony bit). Caused by inflamed bursa. You can get pain of this type for various reasons (e.g. tendon) so more generally there's trochanteric pain syndrome. I had quite a bit of swelling.

I went both to the GP (for a referral) and a private sports physio/GP. The latter seemed better informed in my case.

Dear All - Many thanks for your contributions. The injection has worked to settle the condition, but I have since found through my phsio that I have overdeveloped quads that compensate for a lack of glutes, particularly on my left side, where the problem is. I also have a very weak foot on that side - was not aware of this previously - and I am now set up for personal training to build muscle and try to recover. Fingers crossed  x
