Hi all,
Just bought a tacx trainer and to use my road bike on it would involve a lot of messing around. Changing road to trainer tyres, taking on and off trip HRM/Cadence monitor etc. So i was looking at getting a cheap second bike just to set up. chatting to my neighbour and he gave me this:

only had time for a quick look over but appears the following need to be done/changed/cleaned:

New Wheels
New chain
chain rings/derailleur/crank etc look a mess but i think a good clean should get them in working order.

now my questions are:
would it be cost effective to get this bike working (not worried about spending mroe than the bike is worth) compared to buying a another second hand bike?
As this is only a 5 gear bike would it be any good on a trainer should i get it up and running?

Many thanks

Would it not be cheaper and involved less 'messing around' to just change your tyre and turn off any monitors you didn't want to use? I suppose it depends on how often you'd be swapping the bike between turbo and the road.

The idea is to have 2 bikes set up. 1 on the trainer working on cadence and heart monitoring and road bike for putting that training onto the road. GPS unit I have on my road bike doesn't have cadence and hrm monitors so have bought a second computer. Also idea is to keep road bike weight down so I don't want to be adding extra sensors monitors.
Trainer will probably be used during week and out on road bike at weekends.

Thanks

spally if its trainer use only why change wheels ? but yes worth doing either way .

if not pass it on to somebody else who would do it up , there loads of us about who are not worried or scared about using older style bikes , some of us prefer them

Biggs these wheels have rusted in places beyond repair.

400 its not just the tyres there are a few other little bits that i would use on the trainer and not on the road
