Had my road bike for just over a year now and have really enjoyed the change from years of running - New Year so thought i'd start 2011 with something different......

Went out this morning and did my first ever 50 mile ride ( 52.11 to be exact ) with an average of 14mph - talk about being pleased :-)

Even better first half is mostlty uphill to Storey Arms in the Brecon Beacons ( coming home is a great downhill journey ).

Two things

What do i aim for next ? :-)

Thank you to you all for your words of wisdom and encouragement which have proved invaluable :-)

75 and 100 milers beckon. If you can do 50 you can do 100

Congrats!
The nice thing compared to running Is that increasing miles on a bike happens fairly quickly, so the next would be say a 75 and then a 100 miler! Once you know how to crack the 100, the rest should be fairly easy.
The alternative is to go faster of course, and here I would recommend joining a club. Nothing builds pace like club riding. Maybe some summer 10 mile Time trials? Cheap and cheerful and you're only racing the clock.

Then there are Charity rides, Sportives and Audax depending on the type of cycling you enjoy. Or try some lightweight cycle-touring for a couple of days.

Soon of course you'll be wanting a fixed-wheel bike, an MTB, a pub bike, a winter bike, a touring bike a TT bike ....

Congratulations on the first 50 miler taffref. If you picked a flatter route you could do 100 easy if you enjoyed 50 up and down the beacons.

You wont forget the first time you see the third digit come up on the computer.

Just dont set off too fast and keep eating and drinking through out the day.

Theres a few of us meeting up for a Brecon Beacons weekend in June if you wanted to meet some other addicts for a bit of group therrapy.

If you want a challenge you could try the dragon sportive route (or similar to match your exact location). I think the event is now sold out but the roads are there all year round  .

You get the Rhigos pass and Bwlch pass, two for the price of one.
