It looks pretty hilly to me Jack. Then again, what would I know as I live in Norfolk

It depends on what you're used to, so your definition of "hilly" will change over time . Here's a hill I challenged myself on a few years back. It's still one of the toughest hills I've done.

Almost as hilly as my commute home- your route is running at 81.5ft climbed per mile- which is pretty reasonable for this country, I would maintain that level of distance/ climbing and work on average speed.

Looks like a hikly ride toeme. Why don't you do hill repeats like they do in running if you want to improve on hills.

1000 ft of climbing per 10 miles is what I would consider to be hilly on a ride. Your ride isn't far off that. The good thing about hills is you can't hide going up them. On the flat if you feel tired you can free wheel for a bit. If you do that on a hill you fall off.

I should be puffing my way around some of that route next week when I'm in Consett

I take it you are prepared for the culture shock, it's hard to think of two more diverse areas than Sandhurst and Consett.

It's a lumpy area, no doubt about that.

I've never plucked up the courage to try Shotley Bridge to Consett, that hill looks like it goes on forever.

Another one I don't like is the climb up from the valley to Iveston village, it's very short but the sharper bit after the S-bends has defeated me more than once.

I would describe that as 'lumpy', 'undulating' or 'moderately hilly'. Many of the routes round here are about 25% lumpier than that and I would call them hilly. The really hilly ones are more like 50% lumpier, for example ...

Iveston has a few nasty climbs that one to iveston village is bad though ive rolled down there backwards before when an oncoming ferrari flung aorund the corner and i put my brakes on i just couodnt stop i just rolled, nasty windy and steep, very posh area though!
Shotley to consett isnt actually too bad when you get into it, im from greencroft so have to ride up one of ivestons banks to get home either way unless i trail through leadgate and across the railway line but if im coming from anywhere but consett thats not an option either way its a climb and a half to get home.

Aye, they are well minted in Iveston, so expensive cars are a hazard.

As are horses - they seem to climb the bank without any bother.

You are not doing too badly if you can grind out the climbs around there.

Think ill pop out in half an hour or so and try that one actually as i havent done it with the new bike yet, i do wish i had the option of a 32 rear though as far as i know my sram red mech only goes up to 28 rear anyway its a good training tool having to push that bit harder, once i can freely spin up some of the really steep bits on the 28 ill know im improving then ill gradually work my way down a cog
