Once again I pester for your wisdom. I'm seeking a crankset. and stumbled on this:

I Quote: "The drive side spider was loose on the crank hence sold as spares or repair."
I know 105s are good and can be stupidly expensive so maybe I can save here?
What kind of repairs am I looking at?
cheers

Well it doesn't look broken, but it does look a bit worn...

If they mean the drive side spider is loose on the axle (bb), i'd assume the spider (crank) has come loose and worn . It wouldnt sit properly onto the axle...cant think what you'd so to rectify it, apart from a new spider.

'The drive side spider was loose on the crank'. Meaningless, since the 'spider' is part of the crank. What is probably being referred to is that the splined interface betwixt the right hand crank and the BB axle is shaggered (technical term). Worthless junk unless you require just a LH crank, a set of ring bolts and a pair of chainrings. The RH crank is toast.

yeah you can spend hours filing the faces square to a new taper in the fixing hole but it rarely is sucessful because it has to be so exact to fit evenly all round on every face. One for the bin;)

i see. Anybody got a spare 105 RH crank arm 0: ) ?!
haha
oh well i guess i'm just going to have to buy the disgustingly inappropriate and clunky MTB Shimano Alivio set.. (it's not for a mtb)
wish money grew on trees..

Splined.

I cannot think of a circumstance which would make me take a file to the surfaces of a crank's taper btw.

No, nor me. Surely you'd just end up with a (roughly) square hole that was slightly too big for the BB axle?

no its perfectly possible to file a square taper to recover the surface but it helps if you are an engineer and know what you are doing!

Most cyclists are bone idle and ride a loose crank until the taper is so damaged that it is unrecoverable. Then they are so ham fisted that they muck it up and overtighten it..

For what they cost it really isn't worth wasting your time trying which is why i recommended binning it remember ?!.

My brother started as a trainee technician at Ford when he was 17. On the first day they were given a bench vice, a lump of mild steel, a file and a vernier and told to make an inch cube.
