Is this a problem ?

When sorting out my shifters following the lbs cock up I noticed there seems to be some " play " when I hold the front brake, is this normal ( my other bike doesn't seem to do it) or has the lbs really excelled itself ?

Sorry but it's more like a crap lbs - my £700 Chinese cheap-o is by far and away the best bike I ever owned

It's awesome and doesn't suffer any silly faults like this

yes, take the top cap+spacers+stem off, insert the headset bit in properly, then tighten it all up as much as you can, and push the bottom spacers as far down as you can.

When you say " insert properly " what do you mean ?

Of course

My lbs

Set the bars at the wring angle

Set the shifters at the wrong angle

Flipped the stem

Left 2 stem bolts lose


So I gotta admit I'm on a bit of a downer with them

I mean, make it sit flush with the headtube. Sometimes it will be not in properly, especially if the stem is not as far down as it can go.

Bounce the bike on the front - i.e. lift front from bars and drop. If you get a loud knock/rattle, the headset needs tightening until that stops.

Undo both bolts on back of stem, then tighten the top cap bolt half a turn. Bounce bike again. If knock/rattle gone, then tighten stem bolts. If it still knocks or has play, tighten half a turn again.

Great stuff, Gaz. I get a bit nervous when making adjustments on my bike that I've never done before but it's satisfying and a real confidence boost when it works (no matter how trivial it might seem to other people)!
