Hey guys; I've been lurking for a while;; then I signed up; and now I've made m first post ; woop!

I did a bike ride with a friend just over a month ago, from paris to barcelona in a week; I don't actually own my own bike, but want to get back cycling as soon as possible.

I was offered a 2006 SPECALIZED tarmac comp for ~500 pounds; I was wondering, if I can afford this if it's worth snapping up? I'm thinking yes.

Cheers.

Hi,

Welcome to CycleChat. ;)

If it's been well maintained, then I don't think that's too bad a price.

Have you looked at what else £500 can get you on the second-hand market?

It'll be interesting to see if you can find many other full carbon road bikes for that price.

Cheers,
Shaun

Bloody hell, another jammy b****rd! ;) If it's been well looked after it's probably worth £800+

Obviously make sure the frame and fork are in good condition. It's only 3 years old so nothing major should be amiss unless it's been crashed. Even if it needs a couple of bits replaced (ie chain, cassette, cables etc) it sounds like a bit of a bargain to me. A new one would set you back 3 times as much.

Yes.

Provided it hasn't been crashed and is otherwise in good condition. It's widely said that carbon bikes which have been crashed may have hidden weakness that isn't apparent from surface inspection. I'm not sure to what extent that's an urban myth like the stories that aluminium bikes 'crack and fail'; I've certainly had a very spectacular crash with a carbon bike and I know how strong they are. I sent my frame back to the makers for inspection and they passed it as good so I'm still riding it three years later, but I replaced the forks just on the precautionary principle!

The Tarmac is a very nice frame - one of my riding buddies has one, and it's a seriously nice bike.

Get it.

No, that's a rip-off for a 2006 bike. Besides, it's not a nice bike to ride - very uncomfortable and twitchy, the brakes are usually rubbish and the components are made of cheese.

As a matter of courtesy, and seeing as you are new on here, I'll take it upon myself to relieve you of the crushing guilt you might feel for passing up this purchase... if you get the person involved to PM me directly, I can arrange to take the temptation away from you personally.

I know, I'm a great guy. No thanks necessary.;)

It's a good price for a bike you know isn't stolen.

You do know it isn't stolen, don't you?
