Just about to order a GT avalanche 3.0 (18") with disc brakes. Ive got it through a ride 2 work scheme here in work and was wondering if there are any better bikes I may of missed out on. My budget is £350

Thanks

Apparently it's a good budget bike. I recall it being well reviewed by a number of MTB mags.

It's a great MTB; not the best commuter bike though.

I had the Expert for a bit. It always felt like the handle-bars were a bit too low. If you raised the front end by winding out the u-turn forks (Not on the 3.0) then it was a nightmare to keep the front wheel on the ground while climbing.

Oh just remembered. The standard tyres that came on the bike. Tioga something or another, (Yellow kin?) were too wide and would rub the front mech / frame. I would hope GT have sorted this out on this years model!

That bike is OK.
I now wish I had discs on my commute bike. In the wet, alloy rims and sintered paste blocks make what's called 'squidink' all round the tyres, down the forks and seatstays.

I really, I mean REALLY like the look of the Cannondale Optimo Disc 2.....

Christmas might come early if I see one in a clearout.

If the GT Avalanche 3.0 is going to be your commute bike, you will fit some MTB size roadslicks and full mudguards. The roadslicks will be Kevlar belted. There are some threads on this subject.
Front mudguards on a front sus MTB are attached with zipclips. The rear guards might also have to be fitted by this method. Don't forget to protect the paintwork with plastic insulation tape.

If the bike is for your commute, I wouldn't be getting an MTB at all.

What do you intend to use the bike for pd?
