I would be interested on how you would describe the following circuit I train on close to my home address. Hilly, undulating or hills, what hills them is railway bridges.

The total distance is about 16 miles and it has 3 climbs of note.

  • 210 feet over 2 miles
  • 130 feet over half a mile
  • 346 feet over 1.7 miles.
The rest of the circuit is not flat by any means more long drags and sharp plummets into rural villages.

I don't know if thats hilly or not really. I guess it depends on what you are used to doing. For someone who rides all the time where it is mostly flat it might seem so but if you are accustomed to grinding up and down Pennine or Peak District hills then I doubt it.

Try that site for plotting any routes you like and it can give you an idea of just how much climbing you do on a particular circuit.

That's I route I do when I only have a limited amount of time, it's kind of just 'out and back' but the roads are quiet and the scenery is ok.
That feels hilly to me but it isn't a killer.

Nice route colly, really nice route.

346 over 1.7 miles is a fair old climb, it really depends how much recovery time you have.

130ft over half a mile is similar to one of the mini climbs on my most common loop. I think it's a nice climb to do regularly, not too insane but gets you going. 346ft over 2 miles again similar to the overall totting up of a stint. Does me good anyway. I would say your route is a really nice undulating route by the sound of it.

Looks hilly to me having seen the OS map.

Never been to that part of the world, looks like a nice scenic route.

I have to admit I do find it challenging, which is the point of the exercise I suppose. Given my weight (+4 stone), the weight of my MTB / road / mongrel bike the route can make one puff a bit.

My training ride.

Solihull, Barley Mow – Earlswood, The Reservoir – Wood End, Royal Oak – Mappleborough Green, The Boot – A435, Cross and Bowling Green – Hockley Heath, The Wharf – Bentley Heath, The Drum and Monkey – Home. 25 miles.

The big one is Gorcot Hill. 95m to 166m in 1 km. 7% steady (site of 'roll down' tests). With a favourable tail wind, I can 'big ring' it.
