im bang on 6 foot tall and have a 58 frame....i've been suffering from an sore neck/shoulder for around 2 months now and my knee has also started to ache....i'm wondering if i should have gone for a 56 frame...what do ya think?

No, a 56 frame would be too small imo.
I am 5'9" and ride a 56 frame with a 90mm stem and it fits perfect.

Im 5-10 to 5-11 and have a 56 secteur and roubaix.

I used to get the neck and shoulder ache, I found it was caused by riding with my arms locked at the elbow.

Although this seems like it should be the most relaxing way, it does cause stress and tension. Best way to avoid it is to bend forward a little more, and bend you elbows and relax your shoudlers. It will take a while to get used to this as you will probably feel extra stress on your triceps and core, as they are now taking a bit more weight.

As for the knees I would guess that will be a saddle height and / or cleat issue.

If you can afford it a bike fit is a worthwhile investment. Some people will say its an expensive way of getting someone to adjust your saddle (theres WAAAY more to it than that!), but if you ask questions and learn while you are there then you shouldnt need to go again (unless you get a different type of bike. I had one from cadence sport, also had the footbeds in my shoes and really reduced my foot pins and needles), he also did the cleats too.

I'm 6'3 and i was recently fitted for a 56" Forme bike and i submitted my measurements into Canyon and they came back with a 56" frame, so maybe best to get a fit out in you local LBS

What bike is it? The measurements vary from make to make and model to model. Perhaps someone with the same bike would be well placed to comment . Seat height may be off, bars at wrong angle, stem wrong. All sorts. Assume you have been back to the lbs for their opinion or was it used or a web purchase.

I'm bang on 6ft and ride a 56cm with absolutely no problems. They are variations between different makes of bike, with geometry etc.
A few simple changes could make all the difference, I would recommend a bike fit session.
