Is it possible for a Shimano 3 speed front mech. to work on a compact 2 chain ring ?

Re. above, building another cycle from the bits I have available.
The 3 speed front mech. will it work on a compact chain ring crank ( 2 CHAIN RING ) ?
If not will I have to buy A 2 SPEED MECH ?

Yes it will work.just use the limit screws to stop the chain traveling to far

Yes - the movement is controlled by the shifter, not the mech.

It will work as said above but I think the limit screws may/will be different (may need to change)

Your front mec is for a triple the front mec for a double will/may have different length limit screws
the triple mec has to drop lower to hit the smallest chain ring .
