Do I need to get the spray plaster out?
As a newbie,

The tale is as follows, got rid of second car in July last yearas once eldest got a place in a local school, I didn't need to drive him the 10 miles there anymore, plus I am a SAHM and rarely used the car, so it was bye bye car.

My Dad who rides an electric bike suggested a bike with a child trailer as my then 6 year old was good on his bike & my just 2 year old could go in the trailer. - oh how I laughed & laughed (I don't do exercise ever nor had I been on a bike in over *cough cough* 20 ish years), I came home and said to hubby guess what Dad said about the car going, & told him, expecting him to laugh & laugh. He didn't he said give it a go, I said are you taking the pee?

So we got a 2nd hand bike (which was crap tbh) and a trailer, I would not let hubby buy brand new bike as I said to him look I will give it a go I might try it once and say sod this for a lark.

I tried it, I spent evenings pedaling the length of our road without the trailer, then with the trailer, then I did a trip to the river, I was convinced that first trip to the river was at least 10 miles - it was 0.9 miles, now I do that trip easily.

I am working up to a 2.6 mile trip to the local Supermarket and a 4.1 mile trip to the country park this year, because the supermarket thing means I will have to think & plan less & my youngest adores feeding the Mrs chickens at the country park

I worked out I now cycle the river trip at an average speed of a whole 7 miles an hour, my husband then declared me a cyclist, something he said he would not do until I cycled faster than people walked!

So I can see my improvement I have recently purchased a cycle computer to know how many miles I do in total, I like the idea of that bit, but it kind of worries and perhaps bemuses me about the whole 20 mile trip business and pushing yourself to do better, faster on trips with the strava thingy. Is that a phone thing (I dislike mobile mine is the basic type phone, text not even a camera)

So could someone enlighten me about the faster, longer, better bit, is it more because you view cycling as a sport or ? or?

:laugh::laugh:

But not run! I 'pursued' a couple of cyclists out running a few weeks ago, they seemed relieved when I turned off.

There's no secret to it. You set yourself a target, the coffee shop to meet a friend, over to the shops, etc... and then do it. You've already done that. Speed is unimportant. I bet the only thing that's stopping you going further is your mind.

Hello Puddles,

The slippery slope is you buying your cycle computer!

Before I got one, I just used to ride to Pershore and back, a colossal 41/2 miles, which started to get easier. After I bought one, I started chasing improvements in average speed, and I was lost in a world of self-imposed self improvement! Now I'm a MAMIL, on a road bike, doing the occasional Audax. How did that happen?

The mind thing

That would be true, the supermarket & the "other" country park are like big fangy teethed things in my mind, mainly because then I do battle with Tankers - lots of them on one of the busyiest B roads in the country or on a really bad bad bad shared path.

When I do the near country park it is all off road, I pootle down the the beach back to the cafe, off the the swing park with no problem there so I know I do more than the 4.1 mileage.

I shall conquer it, it is the other vehicles that worry me, not me I can do the mantra "I have every right to be here" & I can refuse to be intimidated to the curb, but its the fact when I get an impatient driver up my bum, my heart starts to race and I try and pedal faster than realistically I am happy with - in short I hate it & I need to conquer that thing, so when a vehicle gets up my bum all huffy & impatient I just carry on as normal and not for want of a better way of putting it panic - there I said it - I panic, it is not fun & I dont like that feeling

I probably should stop reading cycle hatred tweets too

No, it's not essential to keep track of progress, however many of us do as it is human nature to be competitive in some way.

In my case I'm not a particularly fast rider so something like Strava doesn't appeal to me, but as I ride more I find I'm enjoying long rides so a 100 mile ride is the aim sometime this year .

It's entirely up to you how you ride and if you're enjoying yourself then it doesn't matter whether you go fast or slow, take a trip to the river or race across Europe. Just have fun with it.

The more you ride, the more that feeling of panic will fade and yeah, certain things are not to be bothered with, like the the comments section of cycling stories and the twitteratti etc., even the commuting forum on here. 30 years of cycling and a vanishingly small number of incidents to talk about.

Do you know about Cyclecraft? Probably do but that's a good book to start with.

Yes.

although...

You don't need to consider it a sport to enjoy it, in fact the true answer for me is Yes and No, by day its a means of keeping fit whilst I would otherwise be wasting time on a train and at weekends it a sport, a pastime an activity and a hobby which I enjoy with friends who all enjoy...in a modest fashion, getting better and better.

You are already on this path, you just haven't realised/admitted it yet. Your coyness about techno toys and such doesn't hide the fact that you have gained a real sense of achievement from your improvement.

and so you should.

well done by the way, fantastic work, lovely story too, I'd like to meet Mrs Chicken someday

No I don't know about that book, I shall search for it and peer.

I know not much at all about "cycling" except slimey wheels, I love slimey wheels (maybe the general consensus is I shoudln't) but after eleventy hundred million punctures I got slimey wheels and love them.

What I do know about...

I know about decent baskets,

I have learned about really cheap crappy camera's that do the job and fish eye jelly lens that again cheap but do "good enough"

I love my double kick stand.

I know how to pack a trailer complete with picnic & beach gear and spare clothes & lifejackets & a child.

I know where to get custom decals cheap for my trailer.

I know how to hot glue gun rice light leds so littlest has a shiney glow in winter

Trailers are best soaked in fabseal for every day use.

Husbands (well perhaps just mine) are good for creating custom boot bags for bike trailers.

If those busy roads are phazing you and you cant get a copy of cyclecraft anytime soon, then why not take a look at our own cycle guide, we wrote it just for you.

its a bit "commuter" biased but the essentials are all there.

PS, you already know so much more than me, I would never think to stick interior lights on a trailer

Thank you I shall peer lots

The interior lights were initially a mickey take, a friend is very into modding cars, you know all the jazzy led lights and such so I "modded" the trailer as a bit of a joke, but the littlest loves them and the bonus is at dusk in winter, it makes my "3 feet please" sign still be seen

I track mine for my own piece of mind that I am improving. I started cycling to get fit but now I love it and ride to work and back so strava on my phone and my cycle computer are always on however I am more impressed with my recovery time than I am with any of the data I read on my devices.

:stop:
Ditch the computer and enjoy cycling for what it is unless you feel the need to constantly compare your 'performance'. xx(

It really doesn't matter how far you ride or how fast, it just matters that you ride, that you enjoy it, that you encourage others, that you make friends that you enjoy the freedom, thie views, the cheapness, the utility, the smugness of a lower pollution lifestyle, the health bonus.
The only numbers that matters are the numbers of people that ride bikes. You'll know when you're getting fitter and healthier.
