I need to build up my leg muscles and stamina so , as well as going for rides, I am thinking of joining a gym to help with the above. Which equipment do you recommend that I use to help me achieve it? Bear in mind I am not a youngster anymore although the mind is but the body is a bit reluctant. I am 65.

If you have enough space at home, then a room with ventilation and some space to swing some dumb bells or do some skipping should be adequate.

ColinJ posted a link earlier and it looks like it could benefit you.

Gyms can be expensive and after a while the motivation will wane.

Little and often is good.

Will a gym help buld stamina? I am just off for a 2k swim, I do this at least 4 times a week and the changes it has made to my overall fitness and shape is huge. I am not as old but still a fit 60.

Unless you're aiming to become a sprinter then simply getting out and riding lots (or riding lots on a stationary bike/turbo) will do all you need for leg strength and endurance. There's quite a bit of evidence that gym work (free weights with full body movements e.g. squats, deadlifts, lunges etc.) will improve your core strength (which will help with long rides) and reduce your risk of injury.

Yes. Weight lifting is recommended for most men your age to maintain/reduce loss of muscle mass and testosterone production.

The gym can be very helpful for all round fitness with just a few hour long sessions a week. A decent personal training will provide a good all round workout.

I have been meaning to buy this for ages, I'm not a huge fan of "names" but Friel seems to have his head screwed on and is respected in the cycling community.

Plus it's only £6!
