I can't get it to follow the road no matter what. Haven't been able to for about a week, I wonder if it is the new version of firefox I'm running?

v29 on ubuntu 12.04 lts.

It doesn't load the maps at all in Firefox for me, but it's fine in Chromium (non-google branded version of Chrome)

I'm pretty sure this is because Bikehike uses CloudMade as their OSM routing provider, and CloudMade have just stopped supporting small customers - they're pivoting to focus on the in-car navigation market. If you dig into the files being sent back and forth by your browser, Bikehike is getting a "Wrong API key" response from CloudMade.

(shameless plug) Other OSM-based routing services are available and one of them might be in my signature line. ;)

I've never had any luck with the OSM routing.
If people like bikehike and think it is the best of breed, can I suggest you make a donation to help keep it going.

The main advantage for me is that the OS map shows rights of way (yellow roads) whereas Google maps will occasionally route you down private roads and tracks.

I've never heard of this but I've just tried it and it works fine on Chrome. This is going to come in very useful, I've been looking for something like this for ages.

This...

History:
  • May 2014: Changed OSM Routing Provider
    • The previous OSM routing provider (Cloudmade) withdrew their free service. Now using MapQuest for OSM routing and non-UK elevation data. The option of adding coursepoints automatically is not working yet.
      Elevation Courtesy of MapQuest

      Directions Courtesy of MapQuest

Would appear to explain the problem.

Those of us that love BikeHike do so because of the OS integration. OSM too often routes stuff down mislabelled footpaths, private roads, and unrideable bridleways.

Regular "standing order" innit? ;)

OSM data is generally pretty good - it's just that some routing programs are better than others at getting the best results out of it. Often what looks like a "mislabelled footpath" is actually labelled fine, it's just that the routing/rendering program doesn't parse it correctly.

Handled correctly, it's the best routable cycle dataset out there. (But that's not to say there aren't errors.)

Another site that has the options of OSM based routing as well as Google's and of displaying OS maps is gpxeditor.co.uk
The interface is bit "special". It's all done on "context-sensitive" menus (that's right-click to you & me).
Certain aspects are rather audax specific (km only, not miles for instance)

It's been developed by a member over on YACF
Some of us might remember him on here too, took himself a bit seriously ....
