As the title states, my question is, is an average of 100ft of climbing per mile good for building general fitness?

Just about all routes around my area have climbs with the above ratio being an average. At the moment I can manage about 15 miles before the wall having started riding about 7 weeks ago.

Is there anyway of calculating calorie burn when cycling hills? I've seen them based on flat roads, but not for hills.

1 mile is 5280 feet, so that's a 1 in 52 hill

I find long gentle hills a lot better at improving fitness than short sharp leg-burners...
