Got my eye on Giant Revel 1 in blue/black...(not sure what the difference is between the 2011/2012 models?)
Want it just for commuting really(like the look over this compared to some hyrids I've seen at this price).
Assuming it comes with 'off-road' tyres fitted, I was wandering if it would be any good 'on-road' if I was to change the tyres to 'slicks/semi-slicks'?
Regards...

Can you lock out the front suspension? IMO suspension on road, especially unlocked is energy sapping and just an excess weight. Changing tyres I suspect will improve thing but IMO if you are looking solely to commute you'd be better with a bike dedicated to road.

The best commuting tyres by far are Schwalbe Marathon+. Heavy but you won't get a puncture - I bet my bottom dollar on it. I've read of some commuters doing nearly 4000 miles on a set and only needing to change them because they've worn out - not because of a puncture.

As someone who has commuted on a MTB with front suspension without a lockout, let me tell you it is not fun - Especially when powering up hills or standing out of the saddle. Get something with rigid forks or a lockout if you also want to use the bike off road.

Thanks for all the replies so far.
Will look for something lighter with rigid forks as all my commute will be on fairly flat roads.
