Irritating Clicking Sound?

After a fair few rides on my recently purchased summer bike (Kuota KOM), having given it a couple of cleans it now makes a clicking noise which it didn't before, and its irritating the hell out of me.

It sounds like the click is coming from the bottom bracket/front mech, but its only a noise and I can't "feel" any resistance if that makes sense? It doesn't seem to be affecting the performance, other than annoying me.

It only happens when I'm pedalling (not free-wheeling, which rules out anything on the front wheel or brakes), and is quite inconsistent - sometimes it disappears, sometimes very quiet or sometimes very loud. Sometimes it varies between every stroke or every few, and sometimes it sounds like a "click-click" rather than just a "click".

I've tried rotating the pedals with my hand to see if I can see if anything is catching, but then the noise doesn't even happen at all - so its only present when I'm actually riding.

I'm on the verge of taking it to my LBS for them to have a look, as like I said its just annoying and its obviously something that has changed in the 2 months I've had the bike. Anybody got any ideas what it could be? Or is it best if I just take it in for someone who knows far more than I do to take a look?

Thanks in advance!

I went through this again and again with various bikes over the years and never really got to the bottom of it, but now I have.

Take the pedals off, clean the screw threads on the pedals and on the cranks, grease them, and then refit the pedals - works every time.

Let me know how you get on:okay:

Still at a loss with this one. I haven't taken anything apart yet, but tried riding for a short distance in just some normal shoes and t-shirt to see if it was the cleats or anything daft and clothing related, and the click was still there. I've tried turning the pedals with both hands to recreate the motion of both pedals rotating, and it won't click then - so it only clicks when I'm actually riding.

Blasted irritating things these clicks, aren't they? They always sound like they're coming from the bottom bracket but can often be nowhere near it. Try removing, cleaning and reinstalling the seatpost and if that doesn't work the same with the saddle. They both come under pressure with your pedal stroke and can often be the cause. Go for the simple remedies first and work your way through.

I had this for a while and it was the cable end for the front dérailleur hitting the plastic heel of my cycling shoes, took me ages to find it as only happened when on the bike and on the road.

If it's a new bike, take it back to the shop where you bought it

I`ve just told you what one of the most probable causes is (in my experience anyway) and it`s a 2 minute job, also some good other suggestions here. Just looking at the bike and wishing the noise away will not work I`m affraid.

I`m off:evil:

I had this start recently on my bike after shifting to the small ring...my money is somehow on the little cable unless anyone has cleverer ideas. Fiddling with the pedals might also work, but that would require skill and tools, neither of which I possess

Going for a ride now, so will try and see if I can identify any more clues!
The seat might be a decent shout - it had been working itself slightly lose (and making a click I was able to identify!) so I've tightened a few bolts and will keep an eye on it.
Failing that, it will be making a trip back to my LBS on Monday if I can't track it down!

Thanks to all for your replies and help

Check the crank arm clamp bolts are tight as well - clicking annoyed me for a while with the new bike until I figured out what it was.
