iPad versus Samsung Galaxy Note

My iPad is about 8 years old now and is pretty slow at doing anything. I use it mainly for browsing and streaming Prime, iPlayer or Disney+, so no heavy usage. But its response times are getting frustrating and browsing appears to be slowing down as well.

I’m thinking of a replacement device, but am getting a bit fed up with Apple being picky about the charging cable I use, or prompting me every few days to re-enter my password and unlock my account. I don’t use any of Apple‘s storage or mail services.

I’ve got a Samsung Galaxy phone - I had an iPhone but didn’t really like it, although the rest of the family are all Apple nuts. I’m trying to decide whether to go for a new iPad, or whether I should go for an Android tablet like the Galaxy Note - probably a 9+ or 9 Ultra.

Any thoughts?

Although I am an Apple user, an Android device will be much better value for money and will essentially do the same thing. You can also now use iCloud on non-Apple devices.

The latest Apple devices are all now USB-C in terms of charging ports and I have not found them fussy at all about cables.

As to being asked to input your password every few days, that’s not something I have experienced. It may be due to the operating system not being the latest version, though it will be the latest your device supports.

I’m an avid fan of Apple but have twice tried to move to android. The first time was many years ago with a Samsung Galaxy S8. I lasted 11 months with it before moving back to Apple.

More recently I got a Google Pixel 7 Pro, going the whole hog and getting the Pixel watch to replace my Apple one. I was back with Apple within 3 months due the frustrations I had with android.

There is a wider range of android devices, many at attractive price points, and if you’re use is as simple as it seems then you will likely not experience the frustrations I had.

No real experience of android but have had apple stuff for years. My old iPad had to be replaced as it would not support an app I have to use for vital [to me ] information was upgraded.
The new iPad I recently got is a nuisance to operate in many minor ways and is not an improvement on the old one and I object to having to change the charging cables.
By all means try android as it could not be worse.

If you don't like Apple, go for an Android tablet? Maybe buy a lightly used one from CEX and then try for a week or two and if don't like, return within their 30 day no quibble period and swap for another or an iPad (think they might refund in vouchers so check).

I've never been asked for my Apple password except upon set up other than when it's actually needed for security?

Cable wise, my new phone is USB-C but have a number of old USB plugs, just bought a pack of 3 decent cables for a tenner or so from Amazon. May not get the fast charging but as I charge overnight, not an issue

I had to get a new iPad earlier this summer (old one was so old it was moderately useless).

Password: With new one it has a fingerprint sensor on the side power button so to unlock you just touch the button and that's it. Not yet (after many months) had to re-enter my password).

Power cable: New one is USB C and I use a wide variety of different canbles from a wide variety of power sources (from solar panels to several different manufacturers) and it's always charged fine, no grumbles from anything. USB-C power cable is brilliant as no longer custom Apple connector and same as virtually all other mobile devices (I now pretty well wont buy a USB charged device that uses old connectors so have to carry far fewer cables around).
