Hi gang.

I am relatively new to cycling and will be asking advice on a number of matters over the next few weeks.

Nice to be here!

so glad i looked around

thanks everyone, so far, for making me feel so welcome. that may be about to change!

strangely enough i did the right thing for once and took the time to look around the forum and found a thread started by a superb post from andy from otley (so there is some good in yorkshire) which answered most of my questions before i started asking. seriously andy, very grateful for your advice. and yes, i am from lancashire.

anyway, here goes. i am 58 yo and (have been) fairly fit and active. i played a lot of amateur football years ago and have the standard knee trouble today - not too serious but, lets just say, a nuisance. i took part in the running boom in the 80s and 90s. that's my background anyway.

a group of us went up walking in the lakes visiting an old pal who lives outside carlisle and it was suggested that maybe one day in the summer we could bike it up there, a trip of 120 miles or so. two of us decided to take up the challenge. i dusted off my raleigh 12 speed and have been "training" for a couple of weeks. i have copied a schedule from another site but any further advice would be welcome. i also think i need a better bike and have been thinking about a raleigh royal tourer for about £450. a bit more than i would like to pay but the questions are as follows: -

1. do you chaps and ladies think this is the type of bike i need.

2. is it a decent bike for the money.

3. are there any other recommendations.

as i stated earlier, any advice on equipment, training etc would be most welcome.

sorry about going on a bit.

Firstly let me commend you on taking up the challenge.

The spec of tge Raleigh looks good and in my experience they make good if maybe a slightly heavy bike.

For similar money you could also look at a

Dawes Audax Sport 2008 Touring Bike
or a
Dawes Horizon 2008 Touring Bike

With regards to training, I will stick my neck out and say you do NOT NEED a regimented schedule. Get mile sunder your belt vary the pace, terrain and steepness of your routes; eat well before and during your rides (bananas & flapjacks are food of the gods) and keep yourself nicely hydrated

Looks like an OK bike. I actually didn't realize Raleigh was branding anything but the lowest-end dept. store bikes any more. Chromoly, so it's likely to last and give a smooth ride -- something you can build on -- upgrade as needed.

If you don't know, there's a nice big pic here.

Happy riding. Check out the touring hub @ VeloWeb.
