I am looking at doing more intervals i.e 5 mins 4 sets with 2 mins rest. What intervals do you do apart from max effort intervals?

All i want to know is what you do nothing else. I just thought it would be good to see what others do as a insight and i am happy with my training at the moment.

What for? Of course a 5 minute would not be what I call a max effort.

I have used many different training systems over the last 45 years, personally I would get some base down first, which I do not think you have.

What any one else does should have no bearing on what you do, unless of course the other person has precisely the same desired outcome. But you haven't said what that is.

Interval training means that you alternate maximum effort with less than maximum effort or go 10-20-30 where 30 is max and 10 is easy. As others have said the length of the intervals depends on what you want to achieve for Usain Bolt an all out effort lasts for less than 10 seconds but I doubt that this is the right direction for you.As above you should only consider this on a solid base although this does not mean slogging away for hours at low effort. Runners will sometimes do what is known as a fartlek session a Swedish word for speed play so why not find an undulating course and vary your speed by storming the hills relaxing and alternate with low gear spinning and higher gear pushing?

Pyramid intervals as it develops sprint speed, sprint endurance and your ability to recover from multiple hard efforts.

No reason you cant do intervals without a load of "base training" but it depends on why you are doing the intervals and what you are hoping to achieve.

A lot also depends on how much training time you have available, no point trying to do traditional base miles if you only have 6 hours a week available.

Anyway i digress, with intervals it would make sense to vary the effort/recover periods but entirely depends on what you want to achieve


Not sure why you ask the question "apart from max effort intervals" ive always done max effort intervals, whether its 10 secs or 20 mins its a max effort for that duration, indeed if its 2 hours it would also be max effort for that duration, its just the longer the interval the more you move away from anerobic max towards aerobic efforts.

I think the main question you need to be asking is what are you hoping to achieve from your training, what anyone else is doing is totally irrelevant to you
