Answering my own question here.

It must be to do with hand position, your hand position on drops is further forward than on straights, so will move through a bigger arc for the same movement at the stem.

The "Piggy On" bottle cage is a very useful idea. I hate seat packs for aesthetic reasons and stuffing your pockets with stuff is uncomfortable, particularly in hot weather.

Redshift stem - think Girvin Flexstem. That failed as few liked it, some saying that under braking the front of the bike dipped as though the front tyre was flat.

Shimano's design team need sacking as their groupsets get uglier every year and that chainset is an abomination of taste.

I could live with the chainset if it was polished alloy. I don't like black, except on saddles and tyres.
