Integrated v Non-integrated headsets

Maybe I am unlucky but I am sick of adjusting and replacing the integrated headset on my MTB.
I never had any problems with the old style non-integrated headsets over the years.
I have read about the advanteges of integrated and all the newer bikes have them but is longevity compromised in the design?

My suspicions confirmed! I had heard about the cleaner front end and greater area of bearings but whats the point if it wears our fast and wrecks your frame?
Fashion and cost cuttings to blame?
