Posting this in Beginners as it may be of interest to anyone starting out.

Has anyone had recourse to using their 'insurance' CTC or BC is respect of being liable for a road incident or incident involving person/persons who wanted to sue.

I am not referring to bikes stolen etc etc and I more interested in finding out the value of having insurance protection as is it oft a quoted that cyclists in the 'majority' ride without insurance as it is not a legal requirement currently.

Anyone brave enough to admit to having cocked up and being saved by their insurers?
I admit to having no insurance of any kind.. does this make me a 'bad' person?

I have it, but have yet to have a claim made against me. It's proved handy though for my accident last December - still on-going.

So peace of mind with "Accidents where you are absolutely not at fault and sustained damages?"
i.e. prompt payment for injuries/equipment?
Any comeback the following year's insurance quote?
The latter more of an issue with an accident of your own making causing injury/damage.

Alternatively, can these not be pursued via several firms that deal with cycle related issues like that on a no win no fee basis?

Silver Member with British Cycling. Gives me Third party cover - e.g. if I take off a car wing mirror by accident (wing mirrors can be very expensive), and also gives me legal assistance cover in the case of being the injured party.

I was crashed into by a driver last December, I phoned the BC helpline, they put the solicitors in touch, and it's all going through them to sort out my costs (bike damage and physio) and also for personal injury - knackered shoulder and damaged nerves.

The process is slow, i.e. more the hospital record getting and third party insurers. Still on going after nearly 8 months, and likely to be for some time.

This is the second time BC solicitors have acted for me in the last 20 years....so not bad...

I would certainly recommend it, even just for third party cover. CTC also provide similar. It's about £36 and well worth it.

Mr WC was glad of such membership when he was the cycling victim of a hit-and-run. Put it this way, the compensation he received significantly outweighed the cost of membership.. by a few lifetimes.

Most cycling clubs insist you have 3rd party insurance as they don't have insurance themselves.

You could collide with another cyclist in the club where it is your fault or cause an accident involving other traffic. All unlikley but accidents happen. Without cover you could be personally liable if you have any assets. LCC or BCF have schemes.

WHAT? Not a properly constituted cycling club, then. Don't join it. Part of what clubs get from British Cycling in return for affiliation is good insurance for the club, and for all non-open events that it holds (you need additional insurance for opens, but BC will arrange that too).

That is a very good point.
