Install freewheel

Have just put on a 5 speed freewheel on and have forgot to put the ring spacer which sits at the back of the freewheel on. do i need to take it off and put the spacer on? Or can i get away with it?

Sorted now. Took the freewheel off and put the spcer on. Thanks for looking.

The only likely purpose is that some hub/freewheel combinations allow the large sprocket to be too close to the spokes so the spokes rub the mech when the lowest gear is selected.
