I just typed a big long post on why I need inspiration to get out on my bike then accidentally deleted it. Here's a summary:

  • Like riding bikes, but don't live to ride bikes
  • Occasionally enjoy sportives
  • Find magazine training programmes unrealistic in terms of time commitment
  • Need advice so I can enjoy cycling without feeling inadequate

I just want to enjoy riding again. Any tips?

Ahh, golf. A beaureacratic exercise masquerading as recreation. It only serves to make old people feel competitive again, hence all the silly rules to exclude younger people who still enjoy life.

Happy memories of sh*tting in the holes on the Old Course, and stealing all the flags before the Open.

How much does it cost to Oldham?
As col said, just take it as it comes, get some cycling mates.

I find it helps if I keep some kind of fitness going by regular commuting, so that if an event I fancy comes up, i'm fairly sure it won't hurt too much, without the base mileage taking too much out of my normal day-to-day.

It sounds as if you have a half hearted attitude to organised/competitive events, you like to take part but don't like the preparation. Your failure to prepare leaves you with a feeling of inadequacy when alongside those who have prepared.
Give up the group type activity and just get out on your bike and go where you want to go when you want to go.;)
