Hi,

I bought one of these http://www.amazon.co...13421958&sr=8-2 to go on my car.

Unlike the rack on my OH's car (another Thule but with lockable parts) it seems much less secure.

The one I have just bought comes with 'quick release straps', which is fine if going A to B, but not for leaving the car anywhere.

Does anyone have suggestions for improving the security?

I take it you don't have these.

  • Locks carrier to car with accessory 957

Ah, I didn't actually buy it from Amazon, just made the link from there for this post.

I saw these locks and they are rubbish - just plastic and really insubstantial - on the link the reviews say the same.

Could you just use some heavy bike locks/chains?

One/two to lock the bikes to the rack, and one to lock the rack itself to something solid on the car when you're parked up.

You could always speak to RoofRacks who specialise in these products.
See if they have any better ideas.

I have the Thule roof racks and I do agree that the locks aren't the best but I only leave the racks on the car when required.

Lock to the carrier using something like this. I got one of these after having 2 bikes nicked off the roof of my car a couple of weeks ago. Seems pretty good.

My tow bar mounted rack locks onto the car. Can't comment on the quality of the carrier / car lock part 957. Looks pretty insubstantial to me.

And if the bikes are nicked anyway, don't - as I did - imagine the insurers will cover it (see this thread ).

I've got the same rack. I use my D-lock when I park up and the Thule accessory to lock the rack to the car. This is fine for a stop at a motorway service station or similar, but I'd not leave the bike on the rack unattended for any significant amount of time and I normally stick the rack in the boot when I'm travelling with the bike and the rack is not in use.
