A friend of my son's came round with a puncture on his bike. I tried to repair it but the hole was at the neck of the valve and the fix was no good. I told him he'd need a new inner tube.

How is the inner tube measured? The wheel rim measured 22" diameter. Is that the size of inner tube he needs?

It would be better to look for the numbers that are on the side wall of his existing tyre. These will give you the size of the tyre diameter and width (could be expressed in inches or millimetres). Then buy a tube that fits that diameter and width (most tubes will fit a range of widths so buy one that has a range that accommodates the tyre width). Hope this helps.

A bigger inner will also do. Last summer my neighbourgh's son had a a flat on his 22 wheeled bike. We fitted one of my 26 inners with no ill effects.

The extra rubber might make getting the tyre off again difficult. You might also have a fold in the tube, though this isn't likely to have any noticeable effect in everyday use.
