This happened during a MTB Trail ride yesterday. I managed to patch up the inside of the tyre with plastic badges (advertising the Mentro Allan project) and cycle home.

Brake pads rubbing the tyre slightly?

OK thanks very much indeed. I have hedged my bets and got a new wheel as well as realigning the brakes. That said I am riding a loner bike at the moment so I have plenty of time to work on my behemoth

Brake pad damage, nothing to do with the rim at all unless it has a big dent in it. Either the wheel wasn't in straight or one of the brake pads is misalighned.

IN all honestly I probably do not. However the wheel is 20 years old and the one I have now is far newer and also cost me nothing. I have priced up Tiagra 90mm drop brakes (again the originals are 20 years old and have the stopping power of a strong head wind ) and can get a set for around £30 so that should resolve the other side of the equation. I have a few months to sort all this out anyway so I can take my time.

Thanks for all your help

It would have to be a pretty big dent to allow the pad onto the tyre mind you. Are you sure you need a new wheel?

How old is that tyre, because it looks like its perished through age. That part of the sidewall sits behind the rim, and unlikey to have been caused by abrasion from brakes imho

The tyre was a month or so old. Bought from Chain reactions.

I have just e-mailed them to see if I can claim under Warranty? I will let you know the out come -

Copy of e-mail -

{Order ID>>>>>>} One of these tyres blew out the side wall just above the beading after less than two months cycling. I was extremely lucky that it happened on the flat as had it happened a few minutes later I would have been descending a very steep hill. I have attacked a photograph of the blow-out.

If you feel this comes under warranty then please let me know what happens next. I would be very sad not to be able trust any purchases from your company in the future as I and all of my cycling friends sing your praises very highly indeed.

Kind Regards,
