Hello!

I wonder if anyone as any experience of indoor road trainers? I'm keen to maintain my cycle activity through the winter, but due to work am about to hit a period of getting home late and less likely to be cycle commuting. I had considered hitting the road at night but realistically I am less likely to get in the saddle and do this....so I am considering a trainer for my attic conversion, so I have somewhere to ride without fuss.

I have no experience of these at all and wondered if they are worth their while and if there are and brands or specific models to look for or avoid???

Many thanks,

Charlie

Be prepared for some mind numbing boredom.

You will need some source of distraction be it music or TV. You should also get a fan and some means of capturing the sweat that will pour off you. I had a Tacx turbo trainer that gathered dust for three years after being used four of five times before I decided that road riding was preferable.

Having sold the turbo trainer I recently acquired another one, second hand and ridiculously cheap, for the same reasons as you. To date, after a fortnight's ownership, total use = none.

I'm aiming to leave a bike permanently mounted in the trainer but even as I type this reply I am wondering about my commitment to using it.

Indoor/turbo training is as borinig as you want it to be! Its a great way to maintain fitness. Put some music on or get a cycling dvd and you are away.

Now I have recently been looking at al the options as I recently bought another one. The best of the non PC one's is Tacx Satori. Its about £130 from Wiggle .

PS - Don't forget to get a sweat thong for the bike, you will sweat buckets!

Boredom, bum and hand pain and sweat, which will ruin your bike if you're not very careful.

But used with a heart rate monitor a turbo trainer can give you a fantastic workout.
