I was wondering if there was some sort of stand I could buy which I could stick my bike on and pedal it indoors. Why? Just because its handy when I want a quick workout and can't be bothered to pack everything and worry about punctures and all that.

Please don't tell me to buy a gym bike, I barely have enough money to get a semi-decent bike let alone a gym bike, and please don't tell me this is a stupid idea and should go outside and ride. ;)

Tacx, Elite, Cyclops, Minoura, Kurt Kinetic etc....

They do degrade normal tyres faster but you can get trainer specific tyres to avoid that.

Or join a gym that does spinning classes. I didn't use my turbo trainer at all last winter, just went spinning 2 or 3 times a week, and sweated on someone elses bike - an issue with turbo training is the amount of sweat a rider can produce that isn't always noticed on an outdoor ride that will come off you in buckets on a turbo.

If you search turbo trainer on here you'll also get various threads discussing whether the fixed nature of the devices can damage frames, so perhaps another reason to look at gymmembership.

JJB or DW gyms often run spinning classes. Not too expensive either if you can get off peak membership.

No, it's a great idea, Sam.

Top tip - don't buy a turbo trainer new, get one second hand. You'll be spoilt for choice. For every 100 people who buy one, 99 never use them for more than a few months because pedalling away in your garage or wherever is just about the most boring thing you can do on your own. I know, I'm one of the 99. If you're the 1, well done mate.

Just put your bottom bracket on a couple of bricks, its what i do and it means i can get a good workout when not wanting to go outside, and to show off.

Thats why I go to spinning classes - an instructor shouting at you really keeps you on the go!

I found spinning classes too easy. Seriously.
I wanted to do more spinning and honking mixed up. In the classes, i got to max resistance pretty fast and went for ages with it like this, with the instructor shouting to turn the resistance up i would shout, "its on full, wont go no further"
which she didnt beleive sometimes:wacko:

I wanted to be able to sit down and spin fast some more.
She was a dominatrix aswell, when i was there honking i sometimes pictured myself ****ing her. She seemed to be one of those people that would scream at you to go harder, even though you just couldnt go any harder, then when you cant take any more and you lie down, she screams at you to keep going.

I ended up stopping that and just going to the gym, which i prefered.
I got it all free for 3 months due to me doing PE

There seem to be different techniques of spiining instructors, mine doesn't do spinning as such, so leg speed isn't mush different than it would be on the road, none of this ridiculous fast les speed that the low resistance type class seems to promote - I did do a session once with a stand in instructor ans she really pissed me off, "faster, faster" and I'd reached max resistance while she was shouting "more resisatnce".

Re the girl in front in lycra, no, not if you'd seen some of the locals!

I was careful not to go onto the bikes they use incase they beat me up!

what on earth is honking??

Its where you get off your bike, and thrust your crotch at it so hard the tyres make a honking noise as they slide across the floor
