There is a sportive in my area on 26th August. I'd love to give it a go, however it's about 80miles. The most i have ever rode in one go is 50 miles and that was last sunday. I cycle about 4 times a week at present.

The training schedule they have suggested is either 5 or 6 days a week (can't remember for sure) and the longest ride is 65miles.

For me i'd like to get closer to the full distance before the event, if only to give me the belief in myself that i can actually go the distance.

I currently do all my training alone, which i enjoy but this means i don't have the experience of riding in a group.

Does anyone have any advice on training for this? Or am i dreaming about covering this distance in only a few weeks time.?:excl:

As long as I breathe, I attack.
I should not worry to much, if you can do 50 already then 80 will be a breeze by the time you get to the date.
Just remeber to keep hydrated and eat a bit every half hour or so .

is there a local cycle club you could join to gain experience of group riding? You can save a lot of energy when riding in a group once you know the basics.

Your goals to aim for before the event should be:

  • Complete the mileage beforehand (preferably a few weeks before)
  • Hill intervals if the sportive is not flat
  • Prepare for punctures and poor weather conditions

if you can do 50 you can do 80 on the day. No specific training needed, as the only requirement of a sportive is to complete the distance. So, between now and then, just keep riding.

Good advice given already, but if you can do some group rides (with experienced riders) before hand it will push you a bit harder and you will see the benefits of riding in a group.
