Funny, I have trouble with wind at the beginning and end of the day too. But it seems to bother my wife more than me and has nothing to do with cycling

I have a short "I've only got an hour" training run from my house. It's a seven mile climb up to Buckstones which ALWAYS has a headwind. I always console myself that the suffering is worth is because you can really spin it out going back down with the wind behind you. On at least three occasions I can remember the wind changing all the way round to give a headwind on the way back down as well.

It's like the bidirectional up hill. There's a stretch of about 1 mile like this near me. Either way it's a slight incline, up!
However the opposite, where you are always going down hill regardless of the direction ridden is, of course, totally impossible.

Yes I agree. I'm on permanent late's, don't start work until 10am. Out in the garden half eight this morning watering and weeding in bright sunny warm and still conditions, came out at quarter past nine to cycle to work and the sun had gone, the temperature had dropped and it was as windy as hell. I reckon someone somewhere is taking the water, its about time it stopped.

This is why I call myself Lord of the Head Wind. I used to ride a 10 mile loop and had a headwind all the time!!!

There is a reason. If you have a cross wind at 10 mile/h, and you are doing 15, then you appear to have a headwind at 56°. Which very much feels like a headwind. When you turn round, you have exactly the same situation, hence headwind there and back.
OK, how about a 5 mile/h headwind? Turn round, go up to 20 mile/h, and you have a 15 mile/h headwind.
