title says it all really. i've decided on no beer for 2011 (only to win a bet (n+1) with my misses) and doing at least one 100 mile ride once a month. i'm not fast but a bit faster than when i was on my brompton last time. so if anybody near bury, rochdale, burnley fancies a ride let me know.

Crikey, no beer for a year sounds serious. Just have to up the wine and whiskey I guess

Seriously though , To me century rides are something to build up to , a bit of a celebration of life in a way. To be commited to do one a month could turn a celebration into a chore.

I dont think it would work for me but good Luck anf I hope your successful.

Sounds like a great challenge and even better if the n+1 is at the end of it, best of luck!

I will keep an eye out on any outing's as I don't live too far and may be available to offer some company.

I'll be up for a 100 but it won't be January and probably not Feb either, need to get back into it again after winter wimp outs and holidays etc. Done less than 40 miles since end of November.
Hopefully you'll see a new improved me next time

Sounds a good target for you though, good luck with it.

Good luck, I tried this in 2009 and failed. It was hard to find the time for a century each month. So although I did lots of miles only a few months had a century in them.

Hi, I'm based in Prestwich. I'm up for a 100miler. I have two I do starting from Prestwich, one is hilly and takes all day and the other heads out to Cheshire. I havent done over 100 miles since october because of the weather.

My first post looks awfully negative looking back at it.

half the family with flu and the heating playing up is my excuse.

Good luck ,If I didnt live so far away I would ask if i could join you on one or two.

A bit too far away from me, but good luck with the 100 each month. I tried to do the same in 2009 & managed upto October i think, then illness prevented me doing one in November. The 1st one was very hard & I really struggled towards the end & dont think I'd have made it alone, but the subsequent ton rides were easier (bar one with strong headwinds) but didn't have the same sense of achievment as the 1st one
Good luck with the no beer too. I thought about that for this year, but I dont drink a great deal anyway, prob ave less than 5 pints a month nowadays.

I'm going to wimp out  I haven't even signed up for the full NorthWest Passage audax on Feb 19th, only the Mini version. To my way of thinking, the weather/road conditions around this time of year mean I plan my rides accordingly. I wouldn't want to say 'yes' then back out on the day.

But good luck and I'll keep my fingers crossed for the weather (I'll be in Tokyo at the time where a bit of snow adds to it's surreal qualities)

Shaun - I got a message from Calum earlier today suggesting that we do a half-century ride soon. I wrote back suggesting a repeat of the ride that we did in February 2009 which was from Hebden Bridge to the Country Kitchen cafe in Waddington and back. That was 59 miles. I'm proposing Sun 30th Jan, subject to non-freezing conditions.

If you rode to the start in Hebden Bridge, and back afterwards that would be at least an extra 30 miles, so you'd need to do an extra 11 miles somewhere to get your century in.

Is that is of any interest?

[PS Thinking about it, the problem is that if the weather is bad on the 30th, you'd be scuppered - you'd have failed in month 1! I suppose you'd be better off trying to do your ride sooner, rather than later just-in-case. Still, keep you eyes open for my forum ride if you fancy coming along. We could always meet you and drop you off at the Manchester Road traffic lights in Burnley.]

As for February... As Fiona mentioned above, the mini-NWP takes place on the 19th (NB it's a Saturday). I did an extended version of it with fellow Cyclechatters in 2009 from Hebden Bridge which took the distance up to 104 miles. If you rode to and from Rochdale from your home, you'd get an extra 31 miles in taking the distance to 105 miles.

If you're in the Southwest there's always the Glastonbury 100 miler on the 29th Jan.

He's not - he lives in the NW near Burnley about 15 miles from me, which is why I was suggesting he comes along on my ride! ;)

PS Mind you, the Glastonbury ride sounds good for those who are in the SW!

Sorry, it wasn't intended for the original poster, but anyone reading who's further away. I'm not trying to nick his customers.

Ah! It sounds pretty good, so why not start a dedicated thread for it? (I suppose it would have been better if Shaun had added 'in the Burnley area' to his thread title.)

There is no chance of me getting down to Glastonbury for the ride you mentioned, but one day when I do my all-counties tour I'll go and take a look at the area, though not when the festival is taking place!

hi colin,

thanks, but a hilly ride on top of commuting 160miles a week (at current placement) might be a tad too much, i'm thinking of riding to the coast along the coast and back all on main roads, as they are more direct and flat. maybe in about 10 weeks on my next annual leave.
