While i had the tyres and rim tapes off I cleaned up the wheels and put a drop of wd40 on the spoke nipples. Must have wiped a bit onto the braking surfaces when wiping off the excess,

First time I braked it was deafening My usual ly silent brakes sounded like a lorry with rusty brakes doing an emergency stop,I literally looked behind in fear wondering how many seconds I had left on earth.
Couldnt believe it was my bike doing it.

Scrubbed the rims and brake blocks with soapy water , dried and reassembled, now brakes are better than ever and nice and silent again.

Should have used 3 in 1. Much quieter.

My Kool Stop salmons squeal like a stuck pig when temperatures are at freezing or below, at warmer temperatures they are smooth and silent, all very strange.

Reading this just reminded me...
As part of my regular cleaning regime (at work  ) i do several things that aren't exactly recommendable.

Clean the bike then give a good spray with silicone spray. I used to be aware that braking was of course affected, but usually scrubbed it off with a couple of applications of the brakes pre setting off.
The same with WD40...during the winter i clean then spray the calipers with WD then blast it off with compressed air, trying to avoid getting it on the rims/blocks. but they used to squeal for a while as you say.

But then, ive since fitted Ultegra pads....and it doesnt happen any more.
Were the older, cheaper pads harder ?, more affected by WD / silicone.

But yes, WD on the rims or pads can make your bike howl like a banshee
