I'm glad it worked for him, and that the police cooperated. I imagine this is a news story because it is so unusual.

I do hope the coppers got a RIPA authority before their directed operation... (I bet they didn't.) That is the first stumbling block when someone claims they've seen their stolen bike for sale.

This has been reported elsewhere. The chap is wise, had documentary proof and images that the bike was his. In 99.9% of such jobs that fell on my desk the owner had zero evidence the bike they had seen was theirs.

"But I recognise that scratch and that Fyffes bananas sticker" doesn't cut it unless they have a picture to evidence that claim. Record your frame numbers and photograph any unique features before your bike is stolen because one person's word against that of another wont cut it after the event.

Indeed, Foss.

What the great unwashed don't realise is that the police simply don't have the powers to slap on a civvy jacket and go and knock speculatively on someone's door pretending to be a buyer and ask to buy a bicycle.

Nice - a great result for once and fair play to the Police in that instance for actually doing their job. Conversely..

When my ex's bike got nicked and we located it, the dibble couldn't give a toss.

When my car got nicked and we located it, dibble couldn't give a toss until I tacitly implied that if they didn't handle the situation, I'd do it myself.

I'm in the very fortunate situation of never having had a bike stolen (no doubt partially due to my persistant anxiety dictating when / where / how I leave my gear); however were I to find myself in that situation I wouldn't be involving the Police.
